Creating a practical yet beautiful home office

The brief was to turn an unloved study into a beautiful home office - designed to be practical yet inviting - somewhere the client would be happy to spend hours at a time: and be a smart background for online meetings!

Currently cramped and cluttered, the challenge was to design an elegant home office incorporating substantial desk space, plenty of storage and, although primarily an office, the client wished to be able to use the room occasionally to watch TV.   I designed a new layout and decorative scheme working alongside skilled trades contacts, project managing implementation and sourcing all  the elements required to bring the design to life.  Creating a functional, stylish and inspiring workspace with a much more open and spacious feel;  as endorsed by my client - ‘It is incredible, the room looks so much bigger!’

“Clare was fantastic when planning my new study.  She did everything from designing the lay out of the built-in furniture to all the interior design aspects: colour, fabrics, soft furnishings, light fittings and all the little details.  The brief was for a zoom friendly room and I am absolutely delighted with the results.  It has exceeded all my expectations and is now my favourite room in the house!”

Layout

To maximise the limited space in the room, the new layout incorporates bespoke joinery to deliver the desk and storage requirements in place of stand alone furniture.  All elements of the room were considered including changing the swing of the door to improve the flow into the room enabling a small bench sofa to be positioned on the left hand wall opposite the TV and adding a footstool.

Joinery Design

Bespoke joinery maximises functionality in minimum space - the cabinetry enabled utilisation of the full height of the room with provision of amble closed storage and open shelving with integrated lighting creating an attractive display, balanced with symmetry.  The base units were designed to be deeper to give greater storage space with the top section stepped back to give a more spacious feel.  A deep desk stretches the full width of the room providing effective working space.
